Northern Lights

The air is still and cool on the longest night of the year, and the midnight sky stretches onwards infinitely. Twinkling silver stars are splashed across the navy canvas like the flick of a paintbrush, galaxies swirling and stars mapping out stories of ancient legends and heroes.

The light starts softly then gradually explodes into life, soft green and lilac ripple and undulate in waves across the inky blackness, causing my arms to prickle in goosebumps at the ethereal sight.

Mood: A celestial display moves through the sky with colors beyond imagination, reflecting the glow of the shields and the armor of the Valkyrie who choose who live and die in battle.

Smells like: Smoky sandalwood with soft patchouli and a dusting of cracked black pepper.

Longhouse Hearth

Snow falls softly outside onto the frozen ground outside where a bitter wind shakes the trees and bites the bare skin of any weary traveller fool enough to be out in this weather, but from where I am, I feel only heat on my face from the glowing fire at the centre of the room.

We gather firewood from deep within the Northern forest and cast bundles of herbs onto the fire as a large spit turns and roasts tonight’s feast. We pour spiced mead and tell epic tales of warriors long since past.

Mood: A roaring fire blazes inside our cozy longhouse, where we gather to share feasting, story, and song on this longest night.

Smells like: Bright embers, smoky chips of cedarwood, and fragrant herbs crackling in the flames.

Wheel of the Sun

Each year we watch the seasons turn. The leaves first rust orange, then the trees shiver and release them into the damp earth. Winter brings with it so much beauty, but the nights are harsh and long, so we look toward the sun-filled days ahead.

Our culture is rich with traditions to celebrate the patterns of the earth, and we use the natural world around us to decorate our homes. We weave the leaves of evergreen trees into a wreath to represent the never ending cycle of the seasons.

Mood: We set alight wreaths of evergreen leaves and cast them down the snowy hillside, each tree reminding us of the turn of the seasons and the brighter days to come.

Smells like: Spiced red berries ripening in winter, mossy branches, and soft musk.

The Jarl's Chamber

The Jarl of our village is a mighty warrior, renowned for his strength and intelligence in battle. With a belly full of good food and locally-brewed ale, he returns to his bedchamber after the excitement of the Winter Solstice celebrations.

His large wooden bed is carved intricately by the finest craftsman in the village, the etchings showing scenes of nature and wild creatures. The last flames of the day’s fire flicker and fade, leaving glowing charcoal lying in the embers.

Mood: Thick furs are draped over a heavy wooden bed frame and soft candlelight flickers against his braided beard as the Jarl stirs from his deep slumber.

Smells like: Musky cedarwood, warming orange, and sweet spices.

The Yule Tree

The evergreen trees stand tall and proud in the forest, their waxy green leaves reflecting in the low winter sun, the frost that coats the pine needles glistening like the stars of the night sky. These trees remind us that life endures even in the coldest of months, and it will return once more. Snow crunches beneath our boots, birds huddle together for warmth in their nests above in the treetops, and deer scuffle in the distance as we journey out deep into the woods to find the perfect tree for our home.

Mood: We cut the evergreen tree from the forest and decorated it in our home to remind us of the life and warmth in the days to come.

Smells like: Fresh air flowing through the pine forest, moss-covered wood, and a touch of musk.

Braided Sweetbread

All summer we work outside with sweat on our brows to prepare for the coming harvest. We keep honey bees in a hive, caring for them and nurturing them in exchange for thick pieces of syrupy honeycomb.

The merchants in our village trade with travelers from faraway lands and acquire fragrant spices from over the seas, which we wait to use when winter’s first chill arrives. The grain from our store is ground into soft flour with stone and hard labor, and we knead it to create baked treats for the Solstice celebration.

Mood: Folded with spices and honey from the summer past, sweet dough is braided intricately and left to rise in preparation for the solstice feast.

Smells Like: Golden honey with clouds of soft flour, crushed almonds, and a dusting of cinnamon.

The Solstice Games

Mood: Carved fragments of antler and bone rattle in warm hands as we place our bets. We celebrate the longest night with deep laughter, song, and our favorite solstice games.

Smells Like: Cracked apple tree bark, gingered fig with a drizzle of caramel, and a hint of earthy woods.

Old Man Winter

Mood: They say Old Man Winter is the god Ullr, son of a frost giant, who creates the dancing lights in the sky in these days where darkness prevails over the land.

Smells Like: Freshly fallen snow, icicles melting into steeping mint tea, and crushed eucalyptus leaves.

SKOL!

Mood: Our drinking horns smash together as we laugh, spilling honeyed spirits. Outside a bitter wind shakes the trees, but here we toast to brighter days ahead and the return of the warmth.

  • Candle Burning Tips 🔥🕯️

    • For the first burn, let the candle burn for up to 3-4 hours - or until the melted "pool" reaches the edge. (Typically 1-2 hours for a 2oz sample size)

    • Always trim your wooden wick to 1/8 inch. If your wick is too long, the flame will be too big and can become a fire hazard and also give off smoke that shouldn't be there. (Nail clippers work great for wooden wicks!)

    • Clear any debris from your candle before burning, including any soot build-up on the wick. This will help your candle to last longer and burn cleaner! Never burn near anything flammable.

    • Always place your candle on a non-flammable surface! All candle vessels will get hot - be sure to place your candle on a proper candle holder or surface that will not burn or ignite.

    • Never leave a candle unattended! In addition, be sure there is nothing nearby your candle that can ignite (hairspray, a wall, paper, a lamp, etc.)
